Resident Minister – BCO

Harry Gyokyo Bridge has been our resident minister since 2009. He studied Buddhism at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California, and Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan. As a multiracial person of both Anglo-American and Japanese heritage, he tries to live up to his family name by navigating between both cultures, participating in the development of “American Buddhism,” while at the same time honoring the history and traditions of the Japanese who brought Jodo Shinshu to the United States. In addition to his work at the Buddhist Church of Oakland, he is also an instructor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the Center for Buddhist Education of the Buddhist Churches of America.
