KINTSUKUROI – Movie
n.
1. the Japanese art of repairing pottery using gold
2. the strength and beauty found in something that has been broken
The philosophy of KINTSUKUROI shows us that something shattered can be restored and made stronger and more beautiful. The term is an apt metaphor for the Japanese American experience of WWII.
Forced from their homes, farms and businesses, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly imprisoned simply because of their race. Our new feature-length film KINTSUKUROI follows the Ito family from pre-war San Francisco to the concentration camps of the American West to the battlefields of Europe as it endures one of the most shameful periods in American History.
9/7/2024posted – Topaz Stories Exhibits and Events
September 22 – December 13, 2024 @ J-Sei
While a few of the stories in this exhibit were displayed in the Utah State Capitol in 2022, all are being exhibited in California for the first time. The stories provide intensely personal accounts of the forced removal; daily camp life; the dispersal of the Japanese American community through the resettlement program; the heroism of Nisei soldiers with families incarcerated behind barbed wire; the challenges of returning to California after the War; and the impact of the camp experience on survivors and subsequent generations, decades later… Event Link

Downwinders are people who lived downwind from the nuclear tests conducted from 1945 at the Trinity site in New Mexico to the Nevada tests in the 1950s and 1960s. The high exposure to radiation wiped out generations of families due to cancer and other radiation-inked illnesses. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), initially passed in 1990, provides compensation to some downwinders of the Nevada test site, but the Trinity downwinders have never been acknowledged or compensated by the government. RECA expires this year. For more information, follow these links: The Atomic Bomb’s First Victims Were in New Mexico and Extend and Expand RECA.

1-25-2024(posted) – Tule Lake Pilgrimage 2024

2024 Tule Lake Pilgrimage Press Release
2024 Tule Lake Pilgrimage ~
Reframing The Narrative
Dates: Friday, July 5 through Monday, July 8, 2024
Registration forms posted February 19 at www.tulelake.org
The Tule Lake Committee announces an in-person Tule Lake Pilgrimage this July 5-8, 2024. Registration materials will be posted on February 19, 2024 at: www.tulelake.org.
“We look forward to seeing old and new friends at the 2024 pilgrimage to Tule Lake,” pilgrimage chair, Hiroshi Shimizu said. “However, we continue to face challenges caused by the persistence of COVID. With masking, vaccinations and testing, we can protect one another and have another ‘best ever’ pilgrimage.”
The number of spaces for 2024 pilgrims is also impacted by COVID, as those registered for the 2020 pilgrimage canceled due to COVID, were offered pre-registration in 2024. They have until January 31 to complete registration and payment if they wish to join the 2024 pilgrimage.
Remaining spaces in the 2024 pilgrimage community will be prioritized for survivors and descendants of Tule Lake and those who want to help preserve the historic Tule Lake Segregation Center site. Tule Lake is unique among the 10 WRA concentration camps, converted into the only maximum-security segregation center used to imprison and punish over 12,000 Japanese Americans who said ‘no’ to America’s injustice.
“In today’s political climate, Tule Lake is evidence of the threat to democracy caused by racist, anti-immigrant hysteria and greed,” says Shimizu. “This is a sacred place that tells an American story of protest against injustice, a place that should be cherished — not bulldozed, fenced off and erased.”
2024 Tule Lake Pilgrimage Registration
Pilgrimage registration forms will be posted on the www.tulelake.org website on February 19 and should be completed and snail-mailed. Payment is by check only. The registration fee is $650 per person. For those needing assistance, we offer grants that will defray up to $300 of the registration fee. The registration fee is all-inclusive and covers charter bus transportation, lodging, meals and all activities during the four-day pilgrimage.
If you lack internet access and need registration forms mailed to you, or if you want more information, contact Hiroshi Shimizu, cell: 415-317-2686 or email: hshimizu@pacbell.net
We expect registration to fill very quickly this year, and encourage families of survivors and descendants of Tule Lake and those who share our passion to preserve Tule Lake’s social justice history, to complete their registrations promptly.
Pilgrimage Details
Pilgrimage participants travel together in deluxe, chartered buses that depart from San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, Union City, Sacramento, Seattle and Portland.
Accommodations are dormitory rooms at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. There are two housing options: standard double-occupancy rooms are included in the registration fee; a single-occupancy room is an extra $50 per person. Rooms in the 4-bedroom/4-person air-conditioned Village Apartments cost an extra $100 per room/per person. The Village apartments have no elevators and are further from the main activity building.
Activities over the 4-day pilgrimage include a tour of the Tule Lake
concentration camp site and a memorial service. Intergenerational discussion groups and open forums provide an occasion to learn, share experiences and help heal the multi-generational wounds of the incarceration. The final night’s closing cultural program is held at the Ross Ragland Theater in downtown Klamath Falls.

9/08/2023 – Hidden Garden – Shibata Family Garden & Tea House Hayward
Please join us for a series of community conversations about Hayward histories shaping our lives today.
Each conversation will feature individuals who made history through sustained local action and community work. Their histories are exciting and unique yet remain little known. We can learn from these experiences and find inspiration to address present-day challenges.
You can attend all three conversations, or any of your choosing. All events in the series will take place at the Hayward Public Library. Light refreshments will be served. This series is free to the public. Parking in city lots next to the library is free of charge.
Our first conversation will take place on Friday, September 8, and is titled:
Hidden Garden: A Japanese American Family’s Offer of Friendship Honors Culture and Beauty in 20th-Century Hayward
Background: The Shibata family garden and tea house in Hayward were designed by Zenjuro and Koyuri Shibata. Koyuri, who descended from a long line of Buddhist ministers in Japan, drew upon her religious sensibilities to define the garden’s structure and meanings. Many Haywardians attended events hosted in the garden before and after World War II, a garden which still exists today near Highway 92.
The Shibata family garden and tea house are a unique Hayward home, one that tells a story about family, community, and culture. This conversation provides context for understanding this historic site’s origins and its 80-year evolution.
Please contact bridget.ford@csueastbay.edu with questions, or visit haywardhistory.org.
This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org. The Hayward Public Library, the Hayward Area Historical Society, and the History Department at California State University, East Bay, are also sponsors.
Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in the Hayward is Home History Series do not necessarily represent those of California Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.

We have successfully conducted Shichi-Go-San Photo Sessions for over 230 families and 350 children since 2019 and have received extremely positive feedback from the participants. We provide our services all year round, due to high demand.
We would really appreciate it if, working through your extensive network, you could spread the word about this program to the families of your members, clients, patrons, or communities.

8/5/2023 – Nobuo Miyamoto’s 120,00 Stories
We want to let you know tickets are now on sale to experience Nobuko Miyamoto’s only 2023 West Coast performance of “120,000 Stories,” a multimedia musical journey that starts with her Japanese immigrant grandparents, threads through her role in the Asian American movement, includes her own Afro-Asian family, bringing us to the present when she’s still working hard for inclusion, equality for all, and a reverence for our environment.
You may have remembered Nobuko as part of “Chris and Joanne” in the 70s, who created the iconic “Grain of Sand” album, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Center, formerly known as JCCCNC or the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California. We invite you to take part in Celebrating Generations by bringing your friends and family to share this multi-generational, multi-ethnic performance with us.
Tickets ranging from $30-$100 are available at the Presidio Theatre website by clicking here.

4/20/2022 – Community Youth Pebble Collection & Educational Nature Walk Day
- April 30, 2022 – 9:15 to 11:30 am
- Co Sponsored by Fukuoka Sister City Association
OFSCA is honored to be partnering with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) on an exciting and nature-filled day where Oakland youth are invited to participate in a special educational presentation and nature walk with an EBRPD naturalist on topics such as the local watershed system, environmental conservation and protection, climate change and its impacts, the history of the area, and so on.
To deepen the symbolism in the Oakland Fukuoka Sister City 60th Anniversary mosaic mural and celebrate our connectedness to each other and nature, pebbles from Oakland, CA and Fukuoka, Japan will be incorporated into the water design of the mosaic mural with the message of “Compassion, Peace, and Community”.
Participants will be invited to a future US-Japan virtual exchange about the pebble exchange and mural where we can learn from each other.
We celebrate our relationship we have and recognize that water and our natural environments sustain us and connect us to one another
Participation by approved application only.
Approximately 10-15 school-age youth participants and a chaperone.
As youth programming, promoting global citizenry, cultural exchange, education, and community building are central to OFSCA’s mission, we are inviting youth to connect with each other, learn about their local parks and environment, while collecting pebbles.
Fukuoka residents similarly participated in a pebble collection event hosted by the Fukuoka Oakland Friendship Association (FOFA) in January 2022.

Deadline to apply is April 20, 2022 @ 5 pm.
Reach out to us at OFSCAmural@gmail.com if you have questions.
4/11/2022 – Youth Japan Trip – The Center / JCCCNC San Francisco
Since 1997, the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC/the Center) has been providing youth cultural exchange opportunities, between the United States (U.S.) and Japan, for youth and their families, through the Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program (Takahashi Program) and the Shinzen Nikkei Youth Goodwill Program (Shinzen Program). See below or the jcccnc.org website for more information on these programs.
This year, we hope to resume these programs with potential travel to Japan in the Spring and Summer of 2023. If you are interested, please complete our interest survey. Click here for the survey or access it via bit.ly/shinzen2022 or scan the QR code in the image below.
TAKAHASHI YOUTH AMBASSADOR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Workshops: Summer/Fall 2022 and Spring/Summer 2023
Travel: Spring or Summer 2023 (9-10 days)
The Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program (Takahashi Program) was developed in 2011 as a dynamic youth exchange program for high school youth. The significance of a first-hand cultural experience is invaluable in helping a young person in the Japanese American community define their own identity, establish a greater connection to their heritage and encourage continued interest in Japan, its people, culture and history.
The Takahashi Program helps to initiate meaningful dialogue and goodwill exchange and provides students the opportunity to gain and develop leadership and civic skills to help them build a strong foundation for their future endeavors.
Goals of the TYAFP –
- To develop a deeper understanding and awareness of Japan, its culture, people and history as an international citizen ambassador.
- To develop lifelong leadership and civic skills.
- To provide an opportunity to visit Japan and participate in meaningful exchanges with youth from Japan.
- To develop an appreciation and understanding of citizen action and involvement through community and international volunteerism.
- To assist youth in obtaining admission to higher education, scholarships and future recognition through their participation in the program.
SHINZEN NIKKEI YOUTH GOODWILL PROGRAM
Workshops: Summer/Fall 2022 and Spring/Summer 2023
Travel: July 2023 (10 days) with Family
The Shinzen USA Nikkei Youth Goodwill Program is a cross-cultural exchange program that promotes the values of fair play and competition while fostering ties between the U.S. and Japan and local communities. Through sports, youth exchanges, touring and homestays, our young ambassadors build stronger relationships with the people of Japan while learning about their cultural heritage, traditions and identity.
GOALS OF THE SHINZEN PROGRAM
- To promote international goodwill and exchange between the youth of Japan and the youth of the Japanese American community.
- To provide meaningful and thoughtful dialogue and discussion on youth issues related to each other’s culture and heritage.
- To develop and nurture young ambassadors between the U.S. and Japan.
- To provide an opportunity for friendship and spirited competition.
- To promote U.S./Japan bilateral interest and responsibilities amongst young people.
- To engage with and encourage Japanese American youth and their families to learn about their personal family history and our San Francisco Japantown and the broader community.
