KINTSUKUROI – Movie Premier….

n.

1. the Japanese art of repairing pottery using gold

2. the strength and beauty found in something that has been broken

The philosophy of KINTSUKUROI shows us that something shattered can be restored and made stronger and more beautiful. The term is an apt metaphor for the Japanese American experience of WWII.

Forced from their homes, farms and businesses, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly imprisoned simply because of their race. Our new feature-length film KINTSUKUROI follows the Ito family from pre-war San Francisco to the concentration camps of the American West to the battlefields of Europe as it endures one of the most shameful periods in American History.

Please join J-SEI and Ikeibi Films in presenting at 6:30pm August 22 at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Center for the East Bay Premiere of KINTSUKUROI. The film features Ryan Takemiya, Kealani Kitaura, Ken Takeda, Ron Munekawa, Kiyomi Koide, Timothy Hsu, Sarah Lee, David Kiyoshi Tom and Chizu Omori. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and crew.

Join us for the opening reception for our Day of Remembrance Community Map Project on Saturday, February 18th, featuring a performance from Emeryville Taiko and a community panel about the role of art, memory, and place in the movement for civil rights.

This project is in honor of Day of Remembrance on February 19th, which marks the day in 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, giving the U.S. Army the authority to forcibly remove and incarcerate Americans of Japanese ancestry residing on the West Coast during WWII. 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were impacted, and had to abandon their jobs, their homes, and their lives to be sent to one of ten concentration camps scattered in desolate, remote regions of the country…. Friends of Lincoln Square Park is working with the City of Oakland to raise funds to build a 22,000 square-foot recreation center to replace an old, overcrowded facility. As part of this project, it is seeking to interview people who grew up playing at the park or went to Lincoln School next door. It has many Chinese American interviewees, but wants to interview the Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, and others who were part of the scene. To find out more about the campaign, visit www.friendsoflincolnsquarepark.org; if you would like to be interviewed or want to find out more about the project, please contact Grant Din at grant@friendsoflincolnsquarepark.org.
