…Our digital series of NextGen Geijutsuka is proud to co-present with the Ukrainian Heritage Club of Northern California in a special program that shares in the music of two countries : Ukraine and Japan, joining in friendship and hope for the Ukrainian people. It also celebrates the cultural music of two cultures hoping to continue and thrive in the U.S. They play an important role in sharing the beauty of these art forms with the wider world in a collaborative way.

This is a program of music and stories of Ukrainian people and of their heritage, from Ukraine and Sacramento, featuring Ukrainian bandura teacher and performer Ola Herasymenko Oliynyk, and her students Sofiia Ishchuk and her father Dmytro Ishchuk who will be tuning in from Ukraine, and Caterina Biscardi, who is of Ukrainian and American descent. Join us for the opening reception for our Day of Remembrance Community Map Project on Saturday, February 18th, featuring a performance from Emeryville Taiko and a community panel about the role of art, memory, and place in the movement for civil rights.

This project is in honor of Day of Remembrance on February 19th, which marks the day in 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, giving the U.S. Army the authority to forcibly remove and incarcerate Americans of Japanese ancestry residing on the West Coast during WWII. 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were impacted, and had to abandon their jobs, their homes, and their lives to be sent to one of ten concentration camps scattered in desolate, remote regions of the country…. A few of these events/meetings will be “Open to All” to attend.  We encourage BCO Sangha members to attend these “Open” meetings. They will be held presented via Zoom Meetings.

Friends of Lincoln Square Park is working with the City of Oakland to raise funds to build a 22,000 square-foot recreation center to replace an old, overcrowded facility. As part of this project, it is seeking to interview people who grew up playing at the park or went to Lincoln School next door. It has many Chinese American interviewees, but wants to interview the Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, and others who were part of the scene.
